Realism Artist Mike Devries at Loose Screw Tattoo Nov. 8-12

Known for his 3-D drawings, Mike Devries is coming to Loose Screw Tattoo on November 8 – 12, 2020. He’ll accept appointments for tattoos and may collaborate with celebrity tattoo artist and shop owner Jesse Smith.

Devries’s realism tattoo designs look as if they can be lifted right from their canvases. Realistic animals, movie characters, gaming themes, and his famous 3-D mini tattoos fill his 17-year tattoo career portfolio. He’s won a wide variety of national and international awards and recognition. Realism hasn’t always been his specialty.

“Had no I idea I was going to fall into any style,” he says. “I thought for the most part tattooers did whatever walked through the door… I did a realism piece one day a year into working, and it stuck.”

Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, the artist started tattooing in 2003.

“I started getting tattooed at 15 or 16 years old,” he says. “I fell in love with everything about it. I always thought it would be super cool to become a tattoo artist, but I didn’t think that would be a reality.”

A construction job with his father after high school actually set him on the career path.

“I met a guy on my lunch break who used to work at a tattoo shop,” he says. “I knew he was good.”

He eventually got a tattoo and then became an apprentice to the artist. Devries eventually opened MD Tattoo Studio in Northridge, Ca. This year, the artist announced the closing of the studio and a big move to Utah this fall. The entrepreneur also owns and develops multiple businesses.

“I’m constantly thinking of new ideas, inside and outside of the tattoo world,” he says. “I’m always thinking of ways to help tattoo artists do their best or to help the industry as a whole succeed.”

Before he settles down in Utah to begin a new chapter, he is headed out on tour. During his trip east, Devries will bring along his cleansing tattoo towels, MD Wipe Outz. He’ll also be sharing tips and tricks along the way, rooted in his Memento Publishing venture, a collection of educational materials for tattoo artists.

After his guest position at Loose Screw Tattoo, Devries will head to New York to tattoo at the Inked Magazine Headquarters November 14-18. As for his return to Utah, Devries says he doesn’t have a permanent location established just yet. Continue to follow him on Instagram for more information and guest spots.
